45 DOLLAR SMILE
Taking the form of a common plastic bag, this icon is well known for its commercial use. In the 1970s for an insurance company, Harvey Ross Ball was paid $45 to design the iconic yellow smiley face with dimples which created a new commercial symbol for happiness. It has been used on bags, balloons, and stickers between many companies since then. The smiley face still has a human connection to most people, everyone has drawn it in a note, scribbled it on a desk, or put it on someone or something. It represents a simple moment of joy, happiness, and love in just a few sketched lines. This icon is widely known from personal usage of expressing joy to commercial advertisements. This work incorporates hand drawn smiley faces from the people around me. Everyone has a unique take on how they do it, even if it’s more generic, it’s still their own.
