The symbols used for this hoodie are directly from the Golden Discs that are currently flying through space on the NASA Voyager Space Shuttles. The symbols are instructions for whoever finds the discs to understand how to use and play “The Sounds of The Earth” record. These symbols face the challenge of being truly universal, we need them to be able to communicate to who or whatever could find them, so they can learn about humans and the Earth. This experiment faced a lot of controversy as even most humans have a hard time interpreting these symbols. Through my other work I play a lot with recontextualizing certain symbols and the materials I use (metal, plastic, enamel, etc) that memorialize the symbols; but these instructions are already memorialized on the metal plated disc flying through space, dealing with little elements. So I used them as decorative prints on a more temporary material allowing the wearer to become the transportation of these now unusable instructions.
